2. Locust Grove Estate

This historic estate sits tucked off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie on a beautiful nature preserve overlooking the Hudson River. After touring the home, strolling through the Visitors' Center galleries and exploring the historic gardens, the gift shop is a great place to end your visit. The shop is filled with unique hand-crafted items, many of which were made locally.

There’s nothing quite like visiting one of Dutchess County’s gilded-age mansion. The experience truly transports you back in time as you stare in awe of the sheer size and beauty of these homes. The Vanderbilt family certainly lived the high life and left their stamp on our region. Staatsburgh State Historic Site is an incredible place to visit. There’s nothing like stepping inside the Mills Mansion and being blown away by the lavish décor and thought that went into each room. We can only imagine what it would have been like to be one of Mrs. Mills’ guests during that time period. Nowadays the mansion gives public tours, themed tours, hosts special events and children’s programs, and the gift shop touches upon each of these.
